    Quiet Summer on the Blog

    August 20th, 2011

You’ve probably noticed there haven’t been any new postings for quite some time.  I’m still here — I’ve just been focusing almost all my energy working on a Master of Arts degree in Music Education at the University of St. Thomas this Summer.  I finished up most of my coursework earlier this month and just have one class and my thesis left to complete.  I’m hoping to graduate in late Spring 2012!

Playing and practicing have taken a big hit the last few months too, but the classes have been amazing.  Studying about how to be a better teacher, you end up reflecting alot about your own learning process and your own music making!  I’ve met some really wonderful people over the past two Summers and I love the faculty at UST.  I’ll be happy to have a little quieter Summer next year, but I’ll miss regularly seeing all the amazing people I’ve gotten to know at St. Thomas.

Now that courses are mostly done, I’m hoping to get back to playing out a little more and posting a little more music here on occasion.  So check back soon for more updates!

    MN Minne-Tour

    Initially posted December 20th, 2010

There’s a new CD almost done and Mark is currently in the process of scheduling a series of concerts in and around the Twin Cities to promote it.  Venues and dates should all be set by early-February.  There will also be a number of more informal coffee-house and restaurant performances coming in Spring as well, so check back in early 2011 for updates.

Come join Mark at this cozy neighborhood coffeehouse for a little afternoon music.  Take a break from the holidays and enjoy Mark’s no-carols-guarantee – just some great music for solo classical guitar.  This may be the last chance to hear Mark before the end of the year, so stop by between 3-4pm on Saturday if you’re in the neighborhood!

Leo Brouwer: Estudio Sencilo No. I

    October 13th, 2010

Piece of the Month: October 2010
Estudio Sencilo No. I by Leo Brouwer

“Simple” is perhaps a little misleading as a description for these studies. Brouwer wrote them as an alternative to existing studies, which were either dry and technical or written in musical idioms that suited the 19th century better than the 20th. While the Esudios Sencillos are certainly accessible to the beginning guitar student, Brouwer’s main goal is a focus on concise, musical expression.  I’m particularly fond of these studies, which seem to bring to mind an ever changing array of characters and images.   I invite you to let your imagination wander as you listen!
